Dear Editor, -I found it astonishing that your extensive report and editorial on speed and safety carried no mention whatsoever of victims. Should the headline have been 'Speeding ... the new littering ?'
Regrettably the evidence suggests this is far from a 'victimless crime' -36,000 people per annum are killed or seriously injured on UK roads, Pedestrians and cyclists make up a quarter of this figure - and an astonishing half the total in our urban areas. By European standards (CfIT, 2002) we have the EU's most hostile roads for nondrivers, linked, unsurprisingly, to the greatest car dependency.See the full content of this document
