We all live within an economy dominated by 'western values'. And these values, we are told by the Economist, have generated one of the most successful periods in Britain's economic history. Their survey of Britain was headed: 'You've never had it so good'. Tell that to the enterprising businessman or woman that goes bankrupt every minute of every working day in Britain.

Insolvencies for the last quarter of 2006 were 55 per cent higher than in 2005. And what of the seven to nine million people that are said to have a serious debt problem? Or the university graduates with an average of pounds 13,250 debt? Or the 8.3 million water customers warned last year that they could face legal action for non- payment of bills? Forty-three per cent more water customers were in trouble over their bills, than the year before. And then there are five million pensioners living on less than pounds 10,000 per year.
