Summary


Munich is not one of those cities that necessarily stands out as a 'mustvisit' location, unless you're en route to its famous October beer festival or to watch Bayern play, but after making my first trip to the city recently, I'm easily persuaded to temporarily don the travel writer's hat and thoroughly recommend a visit.

Old Munich in particular resembled a much larger version of Bruges, though its fabulous football ground, the Allianz Arena, is several steps up from the Belgian club's Jan Breydel Stadium. Built in less than three years and opened in 2005, the Allianz Arena is home to both Munich football clubs, Bayern and TSV 1860. Before construction of the stadium commenced however, a referendum was held to ask Munich's residents whether they approved of the project. Almost two-thirds (65.8 per cent) did; the turnout of 37.5 per cent was the highest ever for a Bavarian referendum.
