The Government last night hit back at claims that they should have done more to protect the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The race was yesterday dropped from the provisional 2005 Formula One calendar after the Northamptonshire track's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, failed to match the financial demands of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
