Police in Zimbabwe defied a court order to give doctors and lawyers access to the country's jailed opposition leader yesterday, it was claimed, amid reports he had been badly beaten since his arrest in a crackdown on dissent.

Morgan Tsvangirai, 54, was detained on Sunday when President Robert Mugabe's security forces used tear gas, water cannon and bullets to break up a prayer meeting organised in face of his ban on political rallies.
