Aston Villa been given clearance by Liverpool to sign Scott Carson, the England international goalkeeper, on a season-long loan deal.

Martin O'Neill, the Villa manager, tried to sign Carson earlier in the summer and is believed to have offered Liverpool pounds 6 million. Liverpool rejected this but were happier with O'Neill's proposal of a temporary transfer.
