The coroner at the inquest of a man who died after routine surgery yesterday criticised a scheme to use private hospitals for cutting operation waiting times. Kehar Singh died in November 2004, a month after undergoing a gall bladder procedure at his local Nuffield hospital. The 80-year-old from Derby had been transferred to the private sector under a Department of Health programme to bring operations forward for NHS patients.
