Nissan Signals Pounds 200m Investment in Sunderland

Summary

The UK car industry was given a major boost yesterday when Japanese giant Nissan unveiled the new Qashqai to start production in Sunderland in December.

The car, with optional four-wheel drive and costing under pounds 15,000, is the latest to be built at the North East site which has seen more than four million cars roll off the production line since the first Nissan Bluebird 20 years ago. It will lead to 200 temporary jobs on top of the workforce of 4,400 as Nissan looks to produce 100,000 Qashqais a year.
