Summary


Cast indisposition meant a delayed start to Thursday's Welsh National Opera presentation of Katya Kabanova. While the audience waited patiently, some orchestra members indulged themselves in mildly irritating 'why are we waiting?' behaviour, but it was not long before they redeemed themselves with an absolutely lustrous account of Janacek's most Puccinian score.

Steven Sloane conducted with an expert feel for the language rhythms which propel the Czech composer's music, and the singers, coached equally expertly, pointed their diction with clarity and shapely phrasing. The surtitles, as almost always these days, were a magnificent help to appreciation.
