Golf: Padraig Looking to Enjoy Seconds ; Volvo Masters

Summary

Padraig Harrington, famous for the number of second places he has had in his career, will settle for another this week - as long as it is in the Order of Merit and not the Volvo Masters.

The popular Irishman goes into the concluding counting event of the season third in the Order of Merit table with winnings of nearly pounds 1.3 million - too far back to catch leader Ernie Els but close enough to Retief Goosen to overtake him. The two South Africans are among six absentees from the pounds 2.5 million tournament. Both opted for the Chrysler Championship in America instead, although Els subsequently had to withdraw because of a finger injury. Harrington's last appearance was his defeat against Els in the semi-finals of the World Match Play at Wentworth, where he was severely handicapped by a thumb injury sustained when he smashed it into a tree hitting a shot. The thumb still bears the scar and is reddened.
