Aston Villa's most lauded player James Milner has suggested that missing out on the Champions League was every bit as disappointing as losing a cup final at Wembley last season Villa experienced a campaign of nearmisses which included a Carling Cup final defeat to Manchester United and an ultimately unsuccessful push for a top four position.

Martin O'Neill's team also saw their FA Cup aims ended at an advanced stage when they lost a semi-final tie against Chelsea, also at Wembley.
