On Wednesday morning a singularly well-informed gang of criminals lifted pounds 25 million - or maybe pounds 40 million - in banknotes belonging to the Bank of England from a depot run by an outfit called, as ill-luck would have it, Securitas.

Then, on Wednesday afternoon the Bank told the world that Securitas had restored all the missing money. Neither the Bank nor the taxpayer has lost a penny.
