Visiting gardens is a national pastime in the UK, whether it be that of a suburban semi which opens once a year under the National Gardens Scheme or of a stately home open all year round.

I recently had the opportunity to look at some of the gardens which open their gates to visitors on the Caribbean island of Grenada. One of the Windward Islands, it is situated 12 north of the equator and about 100 miles from the coast of Venezuela. Gardening in the West Indies is, not surprisingly, a rather different proposition from gardening in the West Midlands. Its tropical climate means the year-round temperature is in the low 80s, but made more comfortable by trade winds and cooler still in the mountainous rainforests of the interior.
