Summary
The highlight of this ramble is to walk the length of the longest aqueduct in England. Aqueducts were used when the canal network was constructed from the 18th century to cross over many existing rivers, roads and valleys.
The celebrated engineer James Brindley constructed the early ones and they were built entirely of masonry. The canal was lined with 'puddle' (clay). Later the method used was to bolt together cast iron troughs supported at each end by strong brick or stone pillars.See the full content of this document
