Summary


Warwickshire will never have a better chance than now to win the county championship since they last landed it in 1995. Recent draws against Kent and Lancashire, two of the division's stronger sides, mean they have avoided damaging defeats --the equivalent to a six- pointer in football terms --and with nine games played out of 16, and a lead of 27 points, it's theirs to lose now.

I can see analogies with the 1994 season, when Warwickshire were one rogue toss of the coin away from landing all four domestic trophies. Their success that year was built around a marvellous team spirit, good captaincy by Dermot Reeve and Tim Munton and the ability to score a stack of runs at high speed. A genius called Brian Lara was instrumental in that, but even when he went off the boil through fatigue, Warwickshire kept racking up big totals.
