Pay can be a highly sensitive issue for any of us in these financially-sensitive times - and executive pay all the more so. Throw the much-maligned bonus system endemic across much of the higher echelon corporate world into the mix, and you have a recipe for robust debate at the very least.

Which brings us to the recent case here in the West Midlands of Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Mr Blackett has seen his total earnings package rise from pounds 112,095 in 2010 to pounds 169,187, with the extra pounds 57,092 before tax paid as part of a deferred award dating back two years.
