Last autumn a tremendously exciting concert was given by the Ex Cathedra Consort (youthful offshoot of the acclaimed parent chamber chorus) at Birmingham Cathedral, and part of the programme was devoted to works by the comparatively unknown Martin Peerson (c1572 - 1651).

Now Hyperion have issued a premiere recording of this immensely rewarding composer's complete 15 Latin Motets from the same forces, directed by Jeffrey Skidmore. This conductor should really be renamed Jack Horner, as he delves into so many out-of-the-way pies and pulls out so many plums.
