A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a car driven by a 74- year-old man who had drunk almost the equivalent of a bottle of wine at a local Conservative club, a court heard yesterday.

Dennis Bates had drunk two 350 millilitre glasses of wine on a night out, "which are the best part a bottle of wine", Mr Mark Wall QC told jurors at Stafford Crown Court.
