Another day, another redundancy story. While many would have hoped that the collapse of MG Rover in March last year would be the last in a succession of stories linking the region to manufacturing decline, unfortunately this has not proved to be the case.

The past two months alone has seen the closure of two Midlands institutions: Peugeot's Ryton car plant and the HP sauce factory in Aston, both of which have reinforced the impression to outside observers that we are in a period of terminal industrial decline.
