Grand National day, Britain's annual splurge on the horses, passed me by as usual. I've only been in one betting shop in my life and that was in Oxford, and the reason for the visit was not to put pounds 5 on No.6 in the 3.15 at Kempton.

Believe it or not, it was to see the painted Jacobean chamber that my Blue Guide indicated was in the room above the shop. Ask at the counter, it said.
