The average petition calling on the council to fix street lights or install a zebra crossing costs just pounds 8 to deal with, not the pounds 2,000 feared, it has been claimed.
Serial petitioners Couns Robert Alden (Cons, Erdington) and Matt Bennett (Cons, Stockland Green), came under fire from Labour opponents last month after submitting 26 petitions each to the full council which it was claimed would cost the authority thousands to deal with. But hitting back during the council's Question Time session Coun Alden said: "I have asked democratic services department and have been told it costs pounds 8 to process a petition.
