Part of the pounds 1.5 billion earmarked for more prison places should be diverted into building units to hold women offenders, an official report said.
The Home Office commissioned Labour peer Baroness Corston to take an in-depth look at the way female offenders are handled. She concluded most if not all women's prisons should be shut down over 10 years, or converted into jails for men. A proportion of the sum - for creating 8,000 new prison places - should be used to develop a network of small, secure units to hold women, possibly in city centres.See the full content of this document
