Summary


November is a good month for meteor showers. The first to appear will be the Taurids, debris from the Comet 2P/Encke. Peak time for these meteors will be around the 3rd/5th but only a handful of 'shooting stars' an hour is the norm.

Better known is the Leonid meteor shower, product of the comet TempelTuttle and the subject of some attention in recent years when meteor 'storms' were experienced in certain areas. Its radiant (apparent origin in the sky) is in Leo and viewing after midnight on the 17th and 18th is advisable to see maximum activity. These meteors are usually very fast and often leave lingering ionisation trails. This year, though, numbers are not expected to be significant.
