A call by MPs for car tax rises to crack down on gas guzzlers will hit owners of some of the most popular family cars, motor manufacturers warned today.
Members of the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee have recommended the highest rate of annual vehicle excise duty (VED) car tax should soar about nine-fold to pounds 1,800. But it is the MPs' call for pounds 300 rises within each band of the VED - depending on a car's emission levels - that has alarmed the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
