The Home Office has disputed claims by the UK Independence Party that Charles Clarke would be unable to implement tough new deportation rules.

UKIP said a European directive which came into force only on Sunday prevents automatic deportation of EU nationals. UKIP leader Roger Knapman said EU Directive 2004/38 stated that "expulsion orders may not be issued by the host member state as a penalty or legal consequence of a custodial penalty".
