The Royal Shakespeare Company has reduced its debts from pounds 2.8 million to just pounds 400,000 after making an annual profit of pounds 2.4 million.

The Stratford-upon-Avonbased company's annual report and accounts for 2003/4 attributed the upswing in its financial fortunes to 'success on stage and efficiency backstage'.
