When I was growing up it was often said that you could pin a red rosette on a sheep in some Welsh valleys and it would get elected on a Labour ticket. It didn't even have to be the prettiest sheep in the flock.

That often heard suggestion incorporated various stereotypes and worked on many different levels. What's more, it could be altered slightly in terms of the region and the animal and still work as a pithy observation.

But not any more. The political picture has changed so much in recent years.

For one thing, Plaid Cymru are giving Labour a run for their money in the valleys and in these days of political correctness and the welfare of all animals the sheep are protected from such inane political point scoring.

Politics has become a lot more serious - or, at least, that is what the politicians would like us to believe.
