One of our most probing and questing of pianists, Stephen Hough brought a typically searching programme for Thursday's recital as part of this year's immensely successful Birmingham International Piano Academy.

In his 250th birthday year Mozart was a major presence in various guises, Hough beginning with Stadler's completion of the brooding C minor Fantasy K396. Ornamentation was neatly turned, with a persuasive sense of logic to the voice-leading in the musical argument.
