The campaign to become Birmingham's first directlyelected mayor has already begun, according to the MP who quit the Commons in a bid to lead the city.
Sion Simon, former MP for Erdington, said he had put together a campaign team and was beginning to raise funding, as he prepared to compete for the Labour nomination. And he said he was appealing to the business community for support, in advance of the ballot which the Government plans to hold on May 3, 2012. Mr Simon, the only declared candidate for the post, was speaking after Ministers published a full timetable for the creation on mayors in England's 12 largest cities, including Birmingham and Coventry. But none of the major parties have formally begun the process of choosing a candidate - even though the battle is already underway for the chance to become mayor of London in an election held on the same day.See the full content of this document
