Plastic football pitches fall into the same category as pop groups such as 1 0cc and Chicago: even when they were at the height of their fashion, they were never regarded as fashionable. Indeed, the best way of insulting Queens Park Rangers in 1981 was to remind them that their plastic pitch was of poor quality and not conducive to good football.

By 1988, the experiment, which also involved Preston North End, Luton Town, and Oldham Athletic, was deemed a failure and plastic pitches were banned, seemingly forever, by the Football Association and later by the game's European (Uefa) and world (Fifa) governing bodies.
