Centre stage sat a huge, battered wedding cake - exactly as Peter Maxwell Davies specifies in the score of his one-woman 1974 chamber opera Miss Donnithorne's Maggot. The Manchester-based new-music group Psappha has made a speciality of this score. So it came as no surprise that their performance was brilliantly assured and shockingly vivid.
