Hundreds of thousands of people fled Texas and Louisiana as Hurricane Rita swirled toward the Gulf Coast yesterday with 175-mph winds in what forecasters said could be the strongest hurricane to ever hit Texas.
Much of Texas and Louisiana - including already-battered New Orleans, low-lying parts of Houston and Galveston - were under mandatory evacuation orders as Rita - now a dangerous category five - drew energy from balmy gulf waters.
