Economic theory tells us that in a market and over time poorer parts of the world catch up with the richer. We've seen it across Europe, with the rise of Spain and Ireland after they joined the EU.

And yet look across our country and we still see big differences. In fact, if we closed the wealth gap between worst and best, our country would be pounds 60 million richer and our region would be pounds 10 million better off than today. That's pounds 2,000 per household.
