West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and whoever wins the Championship play-offs must break out the chequebook if they are not to suffer a similar fate to Derby County and Birmingham City and instantly drop out of the Barclays Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy has warned.

The gulf between the Championship and the Premier League is growing year after year and McCarthy believes Sunderland, who only survived by three points, have now set a bench mark for promoted teams hoping to gain a foothold in the top flight.
