Rugby Football Union president Malcolm Phillips last night took over as temporary chairman of the management board after Graeme Cattermole's resignation was accepted 'for the best interests of the union'.

Cattermole had been involved in a political battle with chief executive Francis Baron, and the RFU council acted to avoid any 'potential damage' to the union from continued reports about 'internal conflict'.
