The Government has rejected calls by the Farm Animal Welfare Council to ban the religious slaughter of animals without stunning the animals first.

Ben Bradshaw, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Minister with responsibility for animal welfare, said Defra supported most of the council's 94 recommendations, published last summer, to improve conditions before and during slaughter.
