Given the fact that Birmingham City's Robbie Savage has been cautioned nearly 50 times in three seasons, words of support from one of the strictest referees in football could be considered somewhat surprising.
But yesterday David Elleray, former Premiership, Uefa and Fifa official, stood by his assessment of the Welsh international as a 'fun' player to referee and even though he described the young Savage as an 'embryonic Vinnie Jones' he also commended him for the way he has matured. Elleray is promoting his autobiography and was talking about the many characters he has had to cope with during his 17 years in the professional game. While many of his colleagues have struggled to cope with the Blues midfielder, Elleray found their relationship reached a watershed in January 2002.See the full content of this document
