The head of the secondary school with the best record in the country for enhancing the performance of its pupils has dismissed Government measures aimed at boosting performance as a waste of time.

Jane Hattatt, headmistress of Birmingham's Lordswood Girls' School in Harborne, said heads were often forced to take on initiatives they did not believe in just to get extra cash.
