Summary


The case of twelve of Britain's leading banks and financial institutions being found in breach of the Data Protection Act for dumping customer details in outdoor rubbish bins has highlighted the need for businesses to ensure adequate steps are taken to safeguard personal information, according to Simon White of law firm Browne Jacobson.

Companies, including Barclays and National Westminster, were caught out by the campaign group Scamsdirect.com and subsequently ordered by the Information Commissioner's Office to sign a formal undertaking to comply with the Data Protection Act in future.
