Uk Seeing Double As Oil Trade Not so Slick After All ; Economics

Summary

A sharp setback in Britain's trade in oil brought to an end an encouraging run of improving numbers earlier this summer for Britain's trade with the rest of the world, writes Nevill Boyd Maunsell. Exports of oil fell by 2.6 per cent between June and July to pounds 1.888 billion, while imports were 10.6 per cent higher at pounds 2.158 billion. The pounds 270 million shortfall stood against a marginal one of pounds 14 million in June - previously reported, with some gusto as a small surplus.

National Statistics blamed double-counting of a pounds 300 million entry by an oil trader for the original mistake. Despite this setback, Britain's wider export boom in goods other than oil and so-called erratic items such as aircraft, ships and precious stones continued unabated, rising by 3.2 per cent month on month to pounds 16.314 billion.
