British Gas parent Centrica yesterday received strong backing for its pounds 2.2billion fund-raising to buy a 25 per cent stake in nuclear power firm British Energy.

Centrica said more than 91 per cent of the new shares offered under its rights issue announced in October had been snapped up by existing shareholders.
