British industry came out of its free fall in March, when manufacturing output steadied with a dip of just 0.1 per cent, the smallest drop for 13 months.

At the same time, National Statistics revised down the 0.9 per cent drop in output it had previously estimated for February to 0.3 per cent, confirming survey evidence that the rate of decline was easing off.
