Summary
I imagine many of you have paid a visit to the Birmingham Back to Backs in Hurst Street by now. If you haven't, let me warn you that they're closed in January for maintenance and open up again next month.
I had one major frustration when I was doing the preparatory research for the Back to Backs, and this was that I could name only a handful of the hundreds of people who lived there. There were a few rate books, and the 10-yearly censuses, of course, but they only began in 1841 and countless people must have come and gone in between a visit from the census enumerators.See the full content of this document
