The question was one I faced every year. I had to decide whether I should spend the two days I had on the snow enjoying some early- season skiing or doing a lot of falling down while learning to snowboard.

I'm not a great skier, but I've never failed to enjoy a session on the pistes since my first trip, a school holiday 18 years ago.
