US Congressman Patrick Kennedy has blamed his Capitol car crash on sleep medication and an anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness.

Kennedy, a Democrat from Rhode Island, the son of Senator Edward Kennedy and nephew of assassinated president John F Kennedy, originally issued a statement about Thursday's accident, saying: "I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident."
