Robert Rock, who had found words like 'dreadful' and 'absolutely awful' to describe his performance in the first round of the Open Championship at St Andrews, has eased up somewhat on the self- denigration.

The Lichfield golfer's second round yesterday was worth 71, he was level-par for the tournament and having got to this estimable position, he was obliged to confess that he had played 'a little better.'
