Legal & General, which has a large operation in Birmingham, reported an eight per cent dip in nine-month new business, dented by slower sales of its high-margin protection and annuity products and a drop in volatile retail investments.

Britain's third-largest insurer yesterday said the UK market looked "more challenging" going into the fourth quarter, but the group still expected to outperform the UK market in 2008, thanks to a distribution deal with building society Nationwide.
