Rejuvenated Maria Sharapova swapped the arid mountains of Arizona for the soggy lawns of Edgbaston Priory yesterday as the AEGON Classic made hay while the sun fizzled.

After a washout of a weekend the event, which still had qualifiers to be completed even after several hours of play, managed an almost undisrupted programme with the Russian superstar winning her first match on grass since losing in the second round at Wimbledon nearly a year ago.
