The sunny spring gave shopkeepers their biggest year-on-year sales boost last month since May, 2004, running down their stocks to a level seen as "barely adequate" to meet future demand.

Motor traders shared in this surprise bonanza, according to the CBI's distributive trades survey. But their success was confined to sales of parts and accessories where an overwhelming balance of 74 per cent said they were ahead of April last year.
