The alleged bugging of a Labour MP has thrown the spotlight once again on the so-called "surveillance society" and the use of technology to eavesdrop in the name of national security.

Last year saw the police and other agencies make 253,500 requests for communications data - telephone calls, emails and post - nearly 700 per day.
